An evening in my other life.

Up at 06:00 with the little one today. The ex-wife called at 12:00 while she was having a nap and wanted to take the little one out for the afternoon. So I got to spent a bit of time in Second Life where I discovered the seedier site of the game. I also got slapped. It really is looking too much like real life to me. I just don't see how it can be long lasting but millions of people have spent a fortune setting up homes and getting jobs. I just don't get it. It's fun at the moment though.

Anyway, I've enough drugs and booze to see off Keith Richards, Ozzy and everyone in BlogPower. Plus enough firepower to start a war.

If you are in there look me up. 'Bag Writer' I'll spend a bit of time in there at the least up until the awards ceremony which is why I joined up. And if anyone can explain what the hook is then let me know.

One thing I have noticed though. I need to improve my typing. by the time I've typed my message I've missed half the conversation when I'm with more than one person. Plus, keeping track of the threads while missing half the words is unusual enough to confuse me.

The threads definitely are unnecessarily complicated. I think the typing problems you're describing are caused, at least in part, by a lag in the system itself. I have the same trouble and I'm a pretty fast typist.

Know what you mean about the seamier side of the game, too-- kind of a shame. It is great fun for poking around in, though. And it's just so cool to me that I can "meet" friends in this format who are states and countries away!

Bag, I am not sure yet what the "hook" is either. I only went there to experiment to see if my awards ceremony idea would fly. I ended up playing property developer with the land I needed to give us somewhere to meet and have got a little carried away!

The in-world costs are acceptable and chatting to people from all over the world is fun, but the monthly "tier" (a sort of land tax) is absurdly high. That alone may drive me away in the end.

However it pans out in future, I am really enjoying conversing with people, like you, whom I feel I know from regularly reading your blogs. I am learning surprising things. Some of our Blogpower friends have a playful side that doesn't come out in their blogging, for example. Or maybe they are just thrown off balance by the surreality of Second Life?

One big advantage is that the anonymous and pseudonymous bloggers can "meet" without compromising their secret identities. Archbishop Cranmer couldn't pick up his recent award in real life because of that. He could have come to SL resplending in his ecclesiastial garments and no-one would be any the wiser.

When it moves from text to voice chat - so people will use their computer microphones and earphones to speak to each other (I have tested the beta version and it's brilliant), your typing problem will go away. We could have future meetings which would basically be a massive conference call with animated graphics. What's not to love about that?

Hi Bag,

So this is who you are! We were in SL at the same time the night before last. I was wondering who's that Bag Man? Now I know.

I was the one tagging along about 12 steps behind everyone else. I'm sure you can't have been slower than me!

Ruthie, Thanks for that. I'm a two finger typist but can build up speed. you don't get the chance to do that and you can't really take your eyes off the screen. I've a faulty keyboard as well which doesn't help. The meeting people is cool.

Tom, It was a good idea to do the awards in SL. I can actually see the benefit of holding our sort of meeting in there but as yet I just don't see the long term holding feature. I like change and once this is set up I see it being boring. Running a business may be interesting enough but not sure what yet. At the moment though it is addictive and I'm having fun. I noticed you have only been on a few months but, with the conversation yesterday, I got the impression that you had something a bit stronger than you are saying here. What with the houses, renting, the airships. Maybe it was just the few months experience making the diference. btw: Thanks for making us welcome and you have a nice family.

Liz, I do remember you don't worry about being last I'm less careful and just click everywhere. I fell out of the airship when I jumped into the pilots hair and it was out of control.

Yes, but at least you can right click...

I need to find the more 'interesting' aspects of Second Life. Except of course, tthese things are better in the flesh...

They sure are not. That slap would not have been better in real life I can assure you. On the other hand she might not have slapped me. Standing next to some sort of bondage chair might mean she is not quite as sweet as she made out.
