How to stop postal vote fraud.
Clearly, I'm a lot thicker than I thought because I don't understand this.In order to reduce postal fraud in the West Midlands they are requesting the police keep watch at the polling stations which have the most postal ballots. Read more here.
Keep watch. What for? Are we expecting a gang to descent and fiddle to ballot without the people in attendance being aware? Surely they will need to simply monitor the postal side and even then it would be unlikely to impact the number of votes rigged at home by dominating partners, people purchasing votes or gangs putting pressure on families. There have always been concerns for postal voting. None of them would be fixed by a police presence at a polling booth.
Or am I missing something?

Looks like yet another case of the authorities having to be seen to be doing something about a problem. I guess this is an easier solution for them than acutally verifying that all of the postal votes come from valid sources.
And you would think it was so simple.
Mr X for 1, Y Rd, AB1 2CD. Postal vote or actual vote. If postal name not on list at polling station.
Of course the real fraud is where people pressure people and watch them fill in the postal forms but coppers at police stations won't make any difference there either.
As you say. Looking like they are doing something is the trademark of government.
