How stupid can we get?

Here is a flight from LAX to the UK. The crew see a suspicious person board apparently bypassing security. So they abort the flight and land at JFK where the passenger was removed. It was a false alarm, as he was an employee, but it was lauded as the right thing to do. Read here.

Now again I mentioned this to someone else and they agreed that it was the right thing to do. Better safe than sorry and all that. I'm starting to seriously consider how bright some people are especially as I am supposed to be working with professional people.

If the crew were so concerned why didn't they just investigate at the time? Why wait till they are in the air?
Why didn't they contact the company as he had used an employee bus? Might that have been a clue?
If it had been a terrorist being in the air over the ocean may be preferred but when the plane is clearly landing then anywhere in the air is a good a place to do your thing.

Of course I'm making the assumption that this will cost American Airlines some serious dosh especially in this time of depressed profits. I'm willing to bet these companies are getting fed up with all this and these sort of things are not going to look good at review time. The government cock ups they can't do anything about but the pilots they sure can.

In the meantime I am getting really concerned about why I need to explain everything to ordinarily bright people. We clearly are getting to the situation where everything is just accepted without question at all walks of life. Won't be long before there are few enough of us awkward b4$^4&ds so they can just round us up and throw away they key. Better safe than sorry.

Yeah, I am too. Especially as I laid the evidence before them about who runs the foreign policy, elects PMs and so on but bright people seem a bit thicko.

It seems to be much worse now. Was not too long ago when you discussed things like this then people picked it up straight away.

I've therefore tended to point out things and leave it at that.

Now I'm having to explain even the simpliest things.

It's called Television. It's there to tell people what to think.

You move around and don't have a screen, they won't listen.

Do you mean to suggest that people are more stupid now than they used to be? Crushed by Ingsoc does make me laugh. That's exactly my experience at school everyday!

In defence of those who say better safe than sorry: They probably meant that once all those mistakes had been made and they were already in the air... the decision seemed right. Not sure that makes them stupid.

Probably not more stupid butless lkely to make any decisions on their own. They need to talk. discuss and then it's much too late.

The analogy wth this case is seeng some fluid under your car. You thnk it is brake fluid butyou drive the car whle talkng to a passanger and then between you you agree that you had better stop and check it out.

It's very unsettling.

Bag,

That's because no-one wants to take responsibility for anything lest they face some health and safety disciplinary grievance procedure and get demoted/sacked or worse, sued.

My children love watching The Incredibles and the bit that makes me smile is Mr Incredible being sued for saving a man who had jumped off an office building and didn't want to be saved.

I'm just waiting for some failed suicide bomber's relatives to sue the authorities for preventing said SB from detonating because he is following his religious beliefs and the policeman prevented him from doing so. Trust me, some half-wit human rights lawyer is probably putting someone up to it as I type.

Henry, You may be right but anyone stupid enough to put themselves and others at risk in this manner needs their heads examined. After all they didn't mind him beng embarrassed by being removed from the aircraft on the ground although a you say it is likely to be a shared responsablity. However, in the interests of safety you don't thnk they could have got together while the plane was still on the ground. Personally I would be wary of flying with American Airlnes if it takes them this lot to raise a simple query.

The good news though is the bombers pick the easy targets so manly the stupid people will be going first.
