Not an easy decision. Unless you are a Politician.

I've read this article about the US 'releasing' someone from Guantanamo Bay to Egypt where he could face torture. It something the UK is also considering. Read here. Now I thought about it long and hard. We don't want to keep these people but at the same time being nice caring people we don't just want to throw them in the grinder. Now my view would be to ask them where they want to go and if that country is willing to receive them then off they go. Problem solved in most cases.

However, if we are going to return them to a country where they may be imprisoned, tortured and/or executed then we must not do it. Our politicians, who of course are never wrong, say they have asked the other Government and they say they will not torture or execute them. As a Government we don't care about imprisonment, after all we imprison people for no reason, so that's OK there too.

How about this radical plan. It will require some law changes but we always have the parliament act if it gets a bit sticky.

We send people back on the receiving countries word as proposed. Checking for crossed fingers of course. Then if they are tortured or killed. We immediately execute the person who signed the return warrant. After all they are betting on someone else's life. They have weighed the odds and found them satisfactory. If there own life was in the firing line then I'm sure they would want more than just promises. If they had some repercussions from their actions then they would not be so blase about making many of the decisions they make on a daily basis.
